CEO's first communication to members

Dear Esteemed Members,

I am greatly honored and delighted for the opportunity you have offered and entrusted me to take the mantle to serve you as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda for the next three years.

I would like to begin by empathising with each and every one of you as Individual and Corporate members for the difficult situation you are currently experiencing caused by the outbreak and spread of the novel Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic ravaging the world now. We have all been negatively affected by the lockdown imposed on us by Presidential Directives, Ministry of Health of Uganda's Guidelines and the World Health Organization's Protocols we ought to follow in the quest to contain the spread of COVID-19. This has led to total or partial closure of majority of our businesses, staff lay-offs, travel and stay-home restrictions, among other behavioral changes we are experiencing.  

I am confident that as Corporate Governance practitioners we shall exhibit our talents to survive this adversity. In fact, I regard the current situation as one which has come about to test our Adversity Quotients (AQs) - the science of resilience. With perseverance and flexibility, we shall weather the storm and even sore higher. We have to adapt to the new normal as fast as we can.

Secondly, my tenure at the helm of the ICGU rests upon your shoulders. As I scan through the list of members, I am very encouraged because I happen to know over 30% of the current membership as serious and dedicated individuals to the cause of Corporate Governance. Together we are going to raise the standards, promote the internationally acceptable principles and deepen the practice of corporate governance in Uganda and the East African region.

I am therefore writing this message as a comrade in the struggle to entrench Corporate Governance in our society. As we call upon new members to join and those who had fallen by the way side to come back in the fold, I would like to assure all of you that I am determined to be your "High Priest" in this endeavor. We are together in the race and I call upon you to renew your strengths, put on more logs and keep the fire burning to transform our organizations to embrace and adore accountability, transparency, integrity, responsibility and excellence. Let me take this chance to urge you to develop a corporate culture that permeates the entire spectrum of our organisations. As Winston Churchill once said “Never let a good crisis go to waste”.

Dison B Okumu

Mr. Dison Bosco Okumu holds a Master of Science in Statistics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. His first degree is a Bachelor of Statistics (Hons) of Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.

He began his career in 1982 with the defunct Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) where he worked in various capacities as a Statistician; Senior Planner, Manager, Corporate Planning & Strategy; and Ag. General Manager Corporate Services. He also had a stint as a United Nations Volunteer in Banjul, The Gambia serving as a Statistician in the Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the Republic of The Gambia from 1988 to 1994.

Mr. Okumu has joined ICGU from Parliamentary Service where he served as Director Corporate Planning & Strategy for 14 years.
